How To Choose A Reliable Contractor

How To Choose A Reliable Contractor

While most contractors are reputable, contractor fraud can occur. The following tips may help you find a reliable, licensed contractor.

Do your homework

Ask your family and friends for referrals or contact your local chamber of commerce. Look for contractors who are:

  • Established in your area with the Better Business Bureau
  • Licensed and/or bonded according to your state’s requirements
  • Fully insured with proper certification

Don't be afraid to ask questions

  • How many years have you been in business?
  • What other projects have you done in the area?
  • May I have a list of referrals and may I contact them?
  • Who will be on-site to supervise the repairs?
  • Do you have regular employees or do you use subcontractors?
  • What permits will you need?
  • How long do you estimate the project will take?
  • When can you start?

Get several bids

Get bids in writing from at least three different contractors. Carefully review them all against each other.

Get a written contract

Once you’ve made your selections, get a contract in writing. Some surprises may still happen, but a comprehensive contract can help prevent mistakes and keep your project on time and on budget.
